Sorry to hear your news, although, as I am now 80, I understand perfectly. My career was short in the Met Office - about two years. I started in the Met O at Hurn, Autumn 1962, in the Control Tower, doing whatever asked - including sloping off when uncommitted to the ATC Training School on site, which was an eye-opener of itself. Having then been sent to the Training School at Stanmore - where I excelled at Weather Map Plotting, so was sent to the then Forecasting Office at Bracknell. I leaned an awful lot, just as the IBM Computer was being installed - a Lady E.O. was the programmer, and I was the input tape maker. Sadly the input went wrong - after 4 moths of unsupervised data entering, my tapes were rejected by the machine, and the poor lady went into disgraceful orbit calling me, a 17 year old, some distinctly obscene names. I left the building never to return, with a heartfelt apology from the director, and I never went back. The event was quietly shelved, and there was no more communication from them whatsoever!. Still I had learned a lot, and has interested me ever since. Best of luck from now on, you kept my interest going.

Good afternoon Sir, It was a pleasure to meet you for my eye examination. We are enjoying your weather information here and will find this most useful for our arable work. I did enjoy our chat and hope I did not take up too much of your time. Kindest

Hello! I am a new discoverer of WessexWeather, and it is like a treasuretrove of fascinating meteorology. Some of my job includes reporting weather conditions (not always successfully), and I certainly realise I have a lot to learn. I am an early riser in Bournemouth, so the day length statistics are especially useful to me. If the admin would ever like to come on the radio, they would be very welcome! 07824790533

I live near the Park, in Poole. I have been interested in Weather from Schooldays at Poole, and continued when I went to work at the Met Office in 1962, at 16, plotting charts at Bracknell for the Forecasters (including a very young Michael Fish). Sadly, after two years, I became homesick for dear old Dorset, and left. Fortunately I have followed the development of Technology in Meteorology, and find today's Internet to be a Gold Mine of Weather Information. I am very pleased to find Wessex Weather, based in Sturminster Marshall, a village with many connections to my family. Wishing you all the best, and happy Weather Observing!
