Sorry to hear your news, although, as I am now 80, I understand perfectly.
My career was short in the Met Office - about two years. I started in the Met O at Hurn, Autumn 1962, in the Control Tower, doing whatever asked - including sloping off when uncommitted to the ATC Training School on site, which was an eye-opener of itself. Having then been sent to the Training School at Stanmore - where I excelled at Weather Map Plotting, so was sent to the then Forecasting Office at Bracknell. I leaned an awful lot, just as the IBM Computer was being installed - a Lady E.O. was the programmer, and I was the input tape maker. Sadly the input went wrong - after 4 moths of unsupervised data entering, my tapes were rejected by the machine, and the poor lady went into disgraceful orbit calling me, a 17 year old, some distinctly obscene names. I left the building never to return, with a heartfelt apology from the director, and I never went back. The event was quietly shelved, and there was no more communication from them whatsoever!. Still I had learned a lot, and has interested me ever since. Best of luck from now on, you kept my interest going. |
